About Emihle Velebayi:
Tell us about your artistic background and experience. What led you to pursue art as a creative outlet?:
I have always been passionate about art since childhood. I remember being fascinated with the various shapes and colours, which inspired me to explore various mediums like painting, ceramics, sculpture and print media. Art has been a source of comfort and self-expression for me.Art not only became my form of self-expression, but an extension of who I am.
What inspires you as an artist? Are there specific themes or subjects that you find yourself drawn to?:
I like drawing inspiration from socio-economic issues that are happening around me and within South Africa.
What do you hope to communicate or evoke through your art? Is there a specific message or emotion that you strive to convey to your audience?
When exploring socio-economic issues through my art, I hope to communicate and evoke awareness such as the on-going Protection fee unrest( my artwork’s title), hoping that it will Illicit emotion, a sense of curiosity and comprehension of the experiences some people have in South Africa.
Are there any particular artists or art movements that have influenced your work? How have they shaped your artistic perspective?
Peter Clarke’s artworks have influenced my work. Clarke’s subject matter of depicting the daily living conditions of ordinary people shaped my artistic perception as it taught me that art does not have to be at a larger scale,it can simply exist through the everyday life that surrounds you.
How do you handle criticism or feedback on your artwork? How do you use it to grow and improve as an artist?
I understand that art is subjective, therefore I convert it to constructive criticism to enhance and grow my work.
Are there any specific goals or aspirations you have for your artistic career? How do you plan to pursue them?
As an artist,my goals and aspirations include showcasing my work in galleries and exhibition and eventually be in a position to assist up coming artists. I plan to pursue them by being consistent in my art and entering competitions, exhibitions and other art platforms to create a name for my self and create a sense of community with other artists.
