About Annika Greeff:
Tell us about your artistic background and experience. What led you to pursue art as a creative outlet?:
When I was 11 years old my art teacher's daughter, who was studying art at the time, brought one of her drawings to class to teach us about art principles. We had to replicate the drawing as one of our assignments and I immediately fell in love with drawing. I bought new art supplies and watched countless hours of YouTube video's on how to draw, and also started experimenting with painting! This year marks my 10th year of creating art and I am proud to be a self-taught artist!
What inspires you as an artist? Are there specific themes or subjects that you find yourself drawn to?:
My favourite theme is realism and hyperrealism. I am inspired by challenging myself to make a drawing or painting appear as if it were a photograph! My favourite medium is graphite pencils and I find that this is the medium in which I achieve the most realistic result.
What do you hope to communicate or evoke through your art? Is there a specific message or emotion that you strive to convey to your audience?
Through my art, I want people to realise that small details are just as important as the bigger picture. Attention to the smaller things, like the bubbles and light specks in my drawing, really makes a big difference in an artwork and it really breathes life into a sketch or painting!
Are there any particular artists or art movements that have influenced your work? How have they shaped your artistic perspective?
I am greatly influenced by Dylan Eakin. His graphite and charcoal drawings in his hyperrealistic style have encouraged me to explore my limits in how real I can make an artwork look. He is a true inspiration and definitely shows that hard work and dedication in an artwork can help you achieve your most desired outcome!
How do you handle criticism or feedback on your artwork? How do you use it to grow and improve as an artist?
Critisism gives you another perspective on your artwork and I see it as a new viewpoint for future pieces! It creates opportunities for you to, perhaps, think more outside the box, or even more inside the box! You can learn a lot about yourself by experimenting with new tecniques, materials, mediums etc.
Are there any specific goals or aspirations you have for your artistic career? How do you plan to pursue them?
I aspire to have a diploma or degree in animation! I want to continue working hard to apply for bursaries and scholarships at universities and colleges to be able to make this dream a reality!
